Over the holiday break, we went roller skating (the first time for the kids).  I skated quite a bit as a child, I remember my parents would clear out the garage and we would skate around to tapes like "Saturday's Warrior".

I've been watching Mad Men - I just finished Season 2 on a streaming movie/tv service.  One feminist website I read (the hathor legacy) claims that although the show attempts to paint the misogyny as in the past, it's still smacks of misogyny and priveldge.

I agree wholeheartedly.

It's surprising how satisfying this small decision is.  Last year the bus stopped a block and a half from our home. Not too far, but far enough that it was mildly inconvenient.  We couldn't sit in the house and wait for the bus.  And the bus is late occasionally, one day we waited for an hour.

I was thinking about what I would like to remember, and what I want to convey about that day and the response.  

In the days and years that followed, the 11th of September has taken on mythical proportions.  I can respect and honor ceremony and ritual.

I attended the wake of a young toddler a few days ago. The child was a relative of a co-worker; I had never met the child before.

Back in the day, I would have overslept my alarm, I wouldn't have woken up.

The school my children attend has a group of students that will be going there for a service project. I wish more secular organizations would sponsor and fund such trips.

A Prayer for Owen Meany by John Irving

I've reduced my diet cola consumption over the past year or so, on the advice of my dentist.  Some family members were in disbelief when they heard this news .  Evidently carbonated beverages can be bad for your teeth.

I picked up a forcing bulb kit over the holiday season.

The flowers are a delight - especially considering the snow and ice outside. My daughter's teacher mentioned that there was a student who started out the school year not able to speak English. Now, this student is at the top of the class.  And, they translated the conference for their parents.

If you haven't been diagnosed with cancer, there's only so much you can do.  It sucks being helpless, watching someone else in pain.

Turns out we've had some winter visitors around our home this year.  I'm pretty sure these are raccoon tracks.  I saw a raccoon crawl in to the sewer opening one night some months ago.  The raccoons in our city remain well fed, even in December.

Despite my joining of certain social networking sites, I have a love/hate relationship with certain cultural trends.  If it's incredibly popular, I'm generally suspicious. 

They selected this book for my book club before much information was known about the movie.  I was understandably skeptical.

twitter seems rather trendy at the moment, and I'm not typically someone who keeps up with every trend.  But this gives me a way to post smaller posts (from my phone).

Things can get busy around here, and I'm not able to read everything I would like.  I have attempted to read some of the classics over the years.  Banned book week was a great incentive for me.  Of course I didn't select just one book, but I plan on attempting  some in the next few months.

We were discussing various topics, and somehow the topic of mormonism came up.  She is not mormon.  I mentioned that if she (or other close friends) were considering joining mormonism, I would have to speak up.

Before I go on, I just wanted to explain exactly what the homework is.  The first part is reading.  Parents are supposed to read to their kids or with their kids three or four times per week.

Back in the early 90s, there was a resurgence of 60s fashion.  It was a type of new hippie culture (because everything comes back in again eventually).  It was related to grunge, but distinctly different.  It involved lots of patchouli, some lava lamps, long flowy skirts, beads, etc.

I visited my parents a few weeks ago, and found this *gem* of a book.  If you saw this link about "mormon food", you know that most Utah mormons have at least fifteen Jello recipes!  I couldn't find a date on this book, I believe it's from the late 1960s.

My Mom did make jello (gelatin) when I was growing up - but I don't think she's made jello for at least fifteen years. This morning as I walked into the kitchen, I noticed it was a bit breezy.  Due to the time change, I was feeling even less "with it" than usual - so it didn't completely register.  Later, I noticed that at least one of the cats had thrown up, and thrown up grass.

So everyone already knows that I was a history major, and I actually don't mind the genealogy obsession.  See here and here.  While I'm not supportive of LDS proxy baptisms, but I think finding out more about one's ancestors is pretty fascinating.

The series was really, really cool.
