I guess I was just thinking about how those kids were lucky in that they did have books and intellectual stimulation in their lives. I think there are probably a lot of children with alcoholic parents sleeping on cardboard boxes who've never seen a book.

I don't think that excuses the parents and their failures; I just thought it was interesting.laurahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05893550834832658123noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2738167594002469989.post-31845786086732177032008-07-29T04:50:00.000-07:002008-07-29T04:50:00.000-07:00Thanks Laura for your comments.Yes, I think intell...Thanks Laura for your comments.

Yes, I think intelligence was valued in that family. I guess all I'm saying is that parenting takes love, encouragement AND physical caring and stability. Maybe I was reading too much into it, and am bringing my own issues into my interpretation. But in my opinion, there was an awful lot in that book that was not appropriate or acceptable.

As the brother pointed out later in the book, you can't just say how much you love and cherish someone, you also have to show them through your actions. Sadly, I think the parents (both parents) failed in that regard.

I hope you and I can agree to disagree on this one?Aerinhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11142518259771067132noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2738167594002469989.post-63961949131788766552008-07-28T21:09:00.000-07:002008-07-28T21:09:00.000-07:00Recent experiences have given me a whole new view ...Recent experiences have given me a whole new view of DCFS/DHS/etc., but that's another story for another blog.

As it so happens, I just read The Glass Castle, too, and what struck me was not so much the poverty and material deprivation (although there's plenty of that, God knows) but that the family all read and talked about ideas, that their father taught them things, that intelligence was valued. It's pretty awful not to feed your kids, but I think that in some ways, the parents did do a good job.laurahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05893550834832658123noreply@blogger.com
